Another fruit that emerged from the bountiful forests of Brazil is the pineapple originally referred to as Nanas by the native Tupi people. From Nanas came Ananas which stuck around in most languages across the world be it Hindi, Farsi, German, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese etc. except for the English who had other plans while naming this exotic fruit. Pineapples don't grow on trees- they are classified as genus Bromelia which have stiff, spike like overlapping leaves that hold rainfall in its pockets. Each plant gives in its lifetime of a couple of years only a single fruit. So the next time you curse while peeling and cutting it keep in mind it took 2 long years and many voyages to become what it is before you.
