The pride and joy of the Indian subcontinent is the Mango which is known to be indigenous to the Indo-Burma region. In Malayalam it is called Manga and once the fruit was acquainted with Vasco de Gama he and his Portuguese sailors carried its name and fame along with them to Portugal where manga met the rest of the western world. The Portuguese were so obsessed with the fruit that we have the Jesuits to thank for developing the art and science of grafting mangoes into the many varieties we enjoy today.
