The orange fruit is known to be indigenous to India, Myanmar and China. One of the early recorded identities of this fruit is Nāranga in Malayalam which is derived from "Naru" for smell and "Kaaya" meaning fruit. There was a time when all citrus fruits came under the bucket of nāranga. Even lime in Malayalam is nāranga and then perhaps orange evolved to "madhur (sweet) nāranga". Nāranga became nāranj when travelling with the Arabs which became nāranja when it reached Spain and then "laranja" when it arrived in Portugal. Looks like the French and the English got the wrong memo which is why we are now calling it orange.
