You can expect to experience sights like these while ambling along the alleys of Puducherry at dawn after a cup of kaapi (coffee). It amazes me how Pātti (grandmother) turns into a contortionist while drawing up a fresh kolam design each morning, devoted to the promise of a brand new day. Kolam is made using a paste of rice flour in these parts and the Tamil word loosely translates to form, nature or even embellishment. The practice of drawing a kolam design after wiping off any traces from the previous day has taught me to learn from yesterday and create today no matter what the outcome. Meanwhile the milkman does his daily rounds while his cycle takes a break from carrying more than it bargained for.
